British Sports Car Icon Lotus Stays Home in Hethel

by admin477351

The iconic British sports car manufacturer Lotus will be staying home in Hethel, Norfolk, its sole UK production site. The company has formally reassured Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds that it has no plans to shut the factory or move production to the US, a move that would have jeopardized 1,300 jobs and been a blow to British industry.
Concerns were ignited after Lotus, owned by China’s Geely, paused production in mid-May, with reports suggesting a US manufacturing shift was being considered. However, an urgent Sunday meeting secured a clear commitment. A Department for Business and Trade spokesperson stated that Reynolds “was reassured by management that they are committed to their UK operations and have no plans to close their Hethel plant.”
Lotus is preparing to resume full operations as US tariffs on car imports are set to decrease, improving the viability of its substantial exports to the American market. The company had previously affirmed that “the UK is the heart of the Lotus brand,” a sentiment now reinforced by its decision.
The Labour MP for South Norfolk, Ben Goldsborough, had voiced deep concern and actively engaged with stakeholders to emphasize the factory’s importance. The government’s backing for the automotive sector through funding and support further solidifies Lotus’s continued presence in the UK.
