Apple is poised to make a significant impact on the foldable smartphone market with the anticipated release of its first foldable iPhone. This move is expected to invigorate a segment that has recently experienced a downturn. Although global shipments for foldable smartphones dipped by 8% in the first half of 2026, industry analysts predict a robust recovery in the latter half of the year. Projections suggest that total shipments in 2026 could reach around 23 million units, with continued growth into 2027.
Analysts forecast that Apple will quickly capture a substantial share of the foldable smartphone market following its entry. According to Smart Analytics Global, the tech giant could command 25% of global foldable shipments by the end of 2026, with this figure potentially rising to approximately 41% in 2027. However, the initial rollout may face supply constraints due to the complexities involved in manufacturing foldable devices. Additionally, the expected price point of over $2,000 could limit early demand, prompting Apple to debut the device in select markets before a worldwide release.
Industry experts, such as those from IDC, believe Apple’s entry could transform foldables into one of the smartphone industry’s fastest-growing segments. Their forecasts indicate that Apple could ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones by 2027, capturing about 40% of the global market. IDC also predicts that the overall market for foldable smartphones will expand to 22.9 million units in 2026, marking a 12.6% increase, followed by an 18% growth to approximately 27 million units in 2027.
The introduction of Apple’s foldable iPhone is anticipated to reshape the competitive landscape, posing a challenge to established players such as Samsung, Huawei, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Reports suggest that Apple’s inaugural foldable model might feature a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch main foldable display. Other expected specifications include Touch ID, an A20 Pro chip manufactured with a 2-nanometer process, and dual 48-megapixel cameras.
If Apple can successfully navigate the hurdles of manufacturing and its high pricing strategy, its entry into the foldable market could provide a substantial boost to the category. This development may rapidly position Apple as a leading entity within the foldable smartphone sector.
