Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has voiced strong condemnation of recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, expressing solidarity with the Kingdom. In a telephone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Tajani emphasized Italy’s commitment to safeguarding civilians and infrastructure in the region. He also expressed gratitude towards Saudi authorities for their efforts in ensuring the safety of Italian citizens residing in the country.
During their discussion, Tajani underscored the necessity of pursuing a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing Yemen crisis, advocating for sustained support of United Nations initiatives. The conversation also covered maritime security issues in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. Both ministers highlighted the critical importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and protecting commercial shipping routes, as well as the need for enhanced security across the Gulf region.
Tajani further noted the significance of bolstering the European Union’s Operation Aspides. This naval defense mission, launched in February 2024, aims to protect maritime traffic in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet issued a warning to the Houthis regarding the consequences of their continued attacks on the Kingdom. The Cabinet reaffirmed the imperative of safeguarding navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait. Additionally, it praised the international Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen for its operations against the Houthi group.
