The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to resume financial support for Yemeni government forces combating Houthi rebels, while Saudi Arabia has committed to providing air support to the coalition. This renewed cooperation comes amid increasing security concerns following Houthi advances and attacks in the region.
The collaboration between the UAE and Saudi Arabia represents a potential improvement in their relations, which had been strained due to differing views on Yemen’s political future and the role of southern separatist groups. The UAE had previously supported and trained southern military units but withdrew its involvement in Yemen in January.
In parallel, Yemen’s internationally recognized government has initiated a counteroffensive aimed at reclaiming territories near Marib and the strategically significant Bab al-Mandab Strait. However, despite these efforts, progress remains limited due to ongoing fighting and persistent security threats.
The conflict has exacerbated regional tensions, with Saudi Arabia experiencing drone and missile attacks attributed to the Houthis. In response, Egypt has expressed its willingness to consider defensive measures to support Saudi Arabia, while the United Kingdom is evaluating requests for additional military assistance.
This ongoing conflict continues to deepen Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, with more than 200,000 individuals reportedly displaced since August. This displacement places further strain on humanitarian organizations working to provide emergency assistance to those affected.
