Saudi Arabia Halts Riyadh Flights Amid Houthi Missile Strikes and Safety Concerns

by admin477351

Saudi Arabia has temporarily suspended flights at Riyadh’s main international airport following a series of missile attacks by Houthi forces that have raised significant concerns about aviation safety and the effectiveness of the country’s air defenses. The decision comes in response to multiple attacks, including a deadly incident on Saturday that reportedly resulted in 13 fatalities and over 300 injuries.

In addition to the suspension of flights, several airlines have also canceled their operations to and from Riyadh following damage to aircraft and fuel facilities. The situation has prompted Saudi authorities to reassess their security measures as further missile launches targeting Saudi cities were reported on Monday. As a precaution, some schoolchildren and office workers have been advised to remain at home.

The attacks underscore the growing threat to Saudi Arabia’s critical infrastructure, including government buildings, airports, and energy facilities. In light of the breaches in its air defense systems, the kingdom is conducting an urgent review to better protect these vital assets.

Despite the ongoing security crisis, Saudi officials are striving to maintain confidence among international investors and stabilize energy markets. Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman has reaffirmed the country’s resolve to withstand such attacks, while Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser cautioned that threats to regional energy infrastructure could have global economic repercussions.

The Houthis have threatened further strikes on Saudi airports and oil facilities, advising workers to avoid potential target sites. They have also warned of retaliation should the United States engage directly in military operations against Yemen.

Meanwhile, conflict continues in Yemen, particularly around the city of Taiz, where Saudi airstrikes are targeting Houthi positions. This ongoing violence has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, leading to warnings about shortages of essential medicines and increased strain on emergency medical services.

Efforts to mediate the conflict remain uncertain, with Iran exploring the possibility of facilitating talks between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. However, proposed temporary ceasefires have yet to yield significant progress. The Houthis have called for a comprehensive political settlement, warning that continued hostilities could further destabilize the region and lead to increased casualties.
